I am writing this blog as if I was living in Puerto Rico. I will be telling what I would be eating day by day for the next 2 weeks I will be explaining some of the most exotic and some of the most traditional foods that I might see on my plate every day. I will be writting and telling you of my experience living an imaginary life in Puerto Rico.

April 28, 2010
Day number two and who knows what night be on my plate. Once again we got up at the crack of dawn to eat breakfast. We had a normal American breakfast and it was a little surprising i thought being here i would only eat exodic foods that have had never ate. We ate pancackes, scrambled eggs and bacon. Though the day we went to a lot of museums so that took a long time, but you better belive that we made time to catch a bit to eat for lunch. Arroz con gandules which is a traditional Puerto Rican dish that contains rice and beans which makes up a large percentage of the countries diet. We did not have an appitizer today because you dont have to have one at every meal but it is not unusual to have one. After lunch we headed out to the beach which was an amazing experience. For dinner we started the meal with surullitos which is sweet cornmeal fritter. The main dish was carne guisada puertorriqueña which is Puerto Ricos version of beef stew. It may contain green peppers, chile peppers, onions, garlic, potatos, olives stuffed with pimeintos, cappers, and of course large chucks of beef. It was really good and very close to the American verion other than the spices. For dessert we had fresh piña coladas which were made from fresh cocunut cream, Puerto Ricos famous white rum and fresh pinnapple juice. After today I dont know what could get better but there is no telling what my house family has in stored for me tomorrow.

April 29 2010
This morning was a real adventure while my house mom prepared breakfast me and some of the others went for a run on the beach. When we came back she had prepared arroz com leche this is like the american version of oatmeal but it is not made with oats. Instead it is made from rice and milk. I thought that it was really interesting, but I think that I will stick with the American version. Some of the people that we where eating with decided that they where going to put sugar on theres and I tried theres and thought that is was a lot better so if you are ever going to eat this i would suggest that way. After we ate we went back to the beach and just enjoyed the water. We came back and had lunch. For lunch we had asopao which is the Puerto Rican version of gumbo that contains chicken, oragino, garlic paprica, green peppers, chile peppers, onions, olives, tomatoes. I thought that it was on of the best things that I have ate so far while I am here. After lunch we just hanged out at the house and talked about the differences in our lifestyles. For dinner we had pastelón de carne which is a Puerto Rican version of the chicken pot pie but it is made with a lot of other kinds of meat. But the one that we had was stuffed with salted pork and ham and contained so many spices that it would take me forever to list them. All of this is poured in a pie shell and covered with a pastry and baked. WOW was it good. For dessert we had flan when she first brought this out I thought there is no way you are getting me to eat this, but of course the convinced me to try it and I thought that is was amazing. It is very similar to the quiche but it lacks the custard like filling. WOW what a day who knows whats in store for me tomorrow.

April 30, 2010
Everyday is like a routine for the people here they always get up at the same time and always eat at the same time. So once agian I had to get up at the crack of dawn so that I would not miss breakfast. For breakfast my house mom decided to take it a little easy today she just made batatas asadas which is just a baked sweet potato that has butter and cinnomon on it. I thought it was pretting good but was not one of the best things I have ate. It was really nice today so we decided to go back to the beach today and enjoy the nice weather. For lunch we had pollo agridulce which is a sweet and sour chicken that is usally served over rice. It was amazing I think that now this was the best thing that I have ate yet now. I loved it I hope that we have this alot more while I am here. For dinner we had lengua rellena which is stuffed beef tongue. This is one of the more exodic foods that they have here in Puerto Rico and I thought that it was a good experience for me to eat this. I dont think that I would order it again in an American resurant because it had a very wild exodic flavor that I dont like to much. But in Puerto Rico it is a real delicacy and you dont get to eat it offen so I had no problem getting rid of what I did not eat. I was kinda ready for dessert because I did not eat that much at dinner because I really did not like it. Fleche con or dessert we had leche de coco. It is a sweet and savory dish. It has coconut and coconut milk and sugar, but on the other hand it has onions, rice and even salt. I thought that this was really good and I ate a lot of it due to the amout of food that I had at dinner.Tomorrow is going to be awsome becuase my house family is throughing a huge pary at dinner and I cant wait.

I am beginning to think that these people think that the early bird gets the worm because it seems like every morning they get up earlier. This morning we are kinda revisiting a couple of days ago with the Puerto Rican style oatmeal but with rice. But this time the oatmeal was made with oats they said that it was called avena which is pretty much Puerto Rican style oatmeal they sometimes put cinniomon and sugar in it which is what we do and it makes it so much better. After breakfast we did not go anywhere we had to stay at the house and help set up for the party. They started to cook dinner right after we ate breakfast because what we are having is going to take all day to prepare. We started to decorate the back yard and then she yelled out the door and said "lunch time". For lunch we had sopón de pollo con arroz  which is like a chicken and rice soup. All that it was chicken, chicken stock, and rice. It really reminded me of my grandmas recipie. So it was just like the American version i thought that it wa relly good. Around five the people started showing up for the party. By six the dinner was finnish we had lechón asado which is a barbequed pig. So I guess that I could say that we had an Puerto Rico version of a pig-pickin it was 10 times more fun then the American version. There was music and dancing it was so fun. For dessert we had boudin de pasas con coco which is a coconut bread pudding it was really good it was like the American version but had a taste of the islands with the coconut. After todays party i dont know how they are going to top that tomrrow.

I have almost been here a week and the days are only getting better between the beach and the food I know why they call this place paridise. Today for breakfast we had one of the most popuar crops of the island plantains. You can prepare them many ways but today for breakfast she made grilled plantains which I thought where really good. She also said that this was the most popular way to prepare them in the US. So I might have to try these when I get back. After breakfast today we went and walked around the local market. I could not belive all of the different fruites and veggies that this country has to offer so she picked up some fresh ingredents and we headed back home for lunch. For lunch we had empanadillas we had these before but I thought they where really good the first time so I was happy to eat them again. This time they were stuffed with pork instead of seafood, but they where still really good. After lunch we headed back down to the beach we stayed there a while and then came back home for dinner. For dinner we had  carne frita con cebolla which is beef stake and onions which I know that I have had in America. I thought that it was really good I would eat this agin. For dessert we had nisperos de batata which we have also had before it is a sweet potato ball that is covered in cinnomon sugar. I thought that they where really good I want to learn how to make these so that I can make them when I get home. I cant wait to see what tomarrow has in store for me.

May 3, 2010
It really dawned on me today that I had not had a cheese burger from McDonalds in a week. I am really beginning to miss America, but the food here is still amazing. For breakfast today we had farina which is Puerto Ricos version of cream of wheat. I really never like cream of wheat even in America but I thought that I would try it again here maybe it is a little different, but I was wronge it taste just like the American version so I hope that we do not have that agian. After that we went down to the beach and we took a ride on a boat that was like a ferry. I thought that it was really fun after we were done we went back and had lunch. For lunch we had sopon de garbanzos con patas de cerdo which is a chicken soup with pigs feet. I have had pigs feet in America but I had never had them mixed into a soup. I thought that it was pretty good but I would not order it in a restaraunt. After lunch we went back to the market and got some more veggies and i also picked up some suvaners to take back home with me. We stayed there a pretting long time when we were done we went back home and had dinner. For dinner we had carne guisada puertorriqueña which is Puerto Rican style beef stew. It tasted like the American version and I love that version so I thought that it was really good. I had beef and alot of the veggies that I bought from the market. For dessert we had polvo de amor which they said translated to "love powder". It is made from graded cocunut that had been browned with butter and sugar in a pot and then served hot and crispy. I thought that is was really good because I like fresh cocunut. I cant wait until tomarrow to eat some more amazing food.

May 4, 2010
Once agian we got up at the crack of dawn I cant wait to get back home so that I can sleep in and relax. For breakfast this morning we had arroz con leche which is a creamy oatmeal that instead of oats it is made of rice. We had this before and I thought that it was really good I want her to teach me how to make this so that I can make it at home for my family. After breakfast we headed down to the beach and just layed around and relaxed. We stayed there for ever but after a while we started heading back to the house because we know that our house mom would almost have lunch ready and we where right we walked in just in time. For lunch we had riñones guisados which is calf kidneys they had a very interesting tast that I had never had before. I thought that it was really interesting. I dont think that I would order this in a restarunt because I really did not like that flavor that it left in my mouth but this a defintly one of the rare dishes they have here so I had to give it a try. After lunch we stayed at home and took a nap beacause we where all really tired but when I woke up my house mom was already preparing dinner. For dinner we where having pollitos asados a la parrilla which is just broiled chicken. She served it we a varity of fresh veggies that we had got form the market a couple of days ago. I thought that this was amazing my mom makes something just like this exept she uses different spices but still it tasted almost idintical to hers so of course I thought that it was really good. For dessert we had piraguas which is the Puerto Rican version of the snow cone. It was shaved ice with a varity of fruity syrups the flavor that I had was papaya. The only differnce between this one and the American version is there are alot more exodic flavors due to there acess to such a varity of fruits. I thought that it was really good and will have to do my research on getting some of those syrups in the US. I am ready to see what tomarrow will bring so bring it on.

May 5, 2010
Today I hope will be just as good as yesterday. Today for breakfast we had funche which is like an oatmeal exept it does not have oats in it but cornmeal. I think that I can remember them having this one other morning and I think that I thought that it was ok then but this time I thought that it just taste like raw cornmeal batter. I really did not like it and I hope that we do not have it agian while I am here. After breakfast we went back to one of my most favorite places I have been in Puerto Rico yet the market. My house mom needed to pick up some veggies for todays lunch but she would not tell me what we where having so I could not wait to get home and see what see what she was going to cook. So after a while we headed back home and she started cooking lunch. She said that we where going to have tortilla española. I asked her what that ment she said that it was a spanish omelet I said I thought that those where breakfast food. She said yea in America they are but here eggs dishes here are mostly ate at lunch and dinner. It had all kinds of meat and veggies just like the American one. I thought that it was really good becuase I love the American version. After we got done eating lunch we went down to the beach and wnet surfing. We stayed there a long time but we finally left as it was getting dark and went back home for dinner. For dinner we had camarones en  cerveza which is shrimp fried in a beer batter. They where served with some of the veggies that we had left over from lunch anda spicy dipping sauce Because the shrimp are cooked at such a high tempture the alchole is all cooked out. I thought that they where really good and I would eat them in America. For dessert today we had one of the islands most popular crops plantians. You can cook them in so many ways but today she cooked them in one of the most popoular ways to cook them on the island fried. They where so good most of the time they are served over vannilla ice cream but she forgot to get some from the market. In America the most popular way to prepare them in grilled and I cant wait to get back home to try this dish grilled. Tomarrow should be just as good as todat I guess I am gonig to have to wait and see.

May 6, 2010
Another warm and sunny day in Puerto Rico and I cant wait to see what amazing food I am going to eat today. Well once agian we started out bright and early with breakfast. For breakfast we had avena  which is Puerto Ricos version of the american oatmeal. It really was not that different then the American one so I thought that it was pretty good because I like oatmeal anyway. We went to the beach after we ate
breakfast beacuse I have found that the best time to go to the beach here is in the morning before all of the tourist show up (even though I am one too). I love the beaches here they are so much whiter and  the water is much more clear then in North Carolina. After we got done at the beach we went back home and ate lunch. For lunch we had caldo gallego which is a really hardy soup with a tone of fresh ingrediants. The soup had in it pork, white beans, ham, collard greens, turnnip greens, and spicy chorizos (Spanish sausage). WOW I thought that it was one of the best things that I have ate here yet. I really want my house mom to write down the recipe, but she said that it was a secret recipe that only was in her family and no one else knows it. After lunch we went to we drove about 45 mins to the nations capital San Juan and walked around the town a little. We did not stay long because we had a 45 min drive in frount of us. When we got back my house mom started to prepare dinner. For dinner we had pollo agridulce which is sweet and sour chicken. Usally she said that you just have this dish by itself but today she put it over rice and served it with some of the veggies that she got in San Juans market. I think that we have had this before while I was here but it was just as good the second time then the first. I really like this dish. For dessert we had boudin de pasas  con coco which is a cocont bread pudding. I really dont like bread pudding from America, but here when they took the bland American version and through in some of the amazing fresh cocunut I thought that it was one of the best desserts I have had yet. WOW what a day I really liked everything I ate so lets see if my house mom can do the same thing tomarrow.

May 7, 2010
I only have 5 more days to spend here with my new friends in Puerto Rico do I am trying to make the best of everyday. So we got up really early and started to eat breakfast. For breakfast we had batatas asadas which is really just a baked sweet potato with some melted butter and cinnoman on it. I really do like sweet potatos but in America I have never had them for breakfast so I think that if I moved here I would really have to get used to eating these crazy foods at all times of the day. After we got doon eating breakfast we went back to one of my most favorite places on the island which is the local market to get some fresh ingrediants for today. After we got done at the maket we went back home and my house mom started preparing lunch. For lunch today we had something that I know that I have had while I was here and in America. We had empanadillas which were stuffed with fish and crab that where deep fried and then served steaming hot. I really thought that they where good. They really beat the ones that you can get at Taco Bell in America. After lunch we went back to the beach and stayed there from lunch until dinner time then we started going back. When we ot back my house mom started making dinner. For dinner we had pastelon de carne which is meat pie. I think that we have had this before and it was good. Last time we had it with pork stuffed in it. So this time she stuffed it with a medly of seafood which was really good. The texture was a little like chicken pot pie in America but instead of chicken it had seafood in it. For dessert we had flan which we have had before and I was not going to eat it and I decied to and I am so glad I did because it was so good. So I was so exited when I heard that we where having it agin. Like I said last time it id a liitle like a quish but it does not have the custard like filling. I thought that it was just as good as the last time. Today was a really great day beacause any day I get to go to the market it has been a good day. Hopefully tomarrow will be just as good.

May 8, 2010
Today was a little weard because we did not get up as early as usale so everyone was in a better mood because they were not so tired. For breakfast we had arroz con leche. We have had this before and I thought that it was differnt then anthing I had ever ate before. It is like the American oatmeal but with rice instead of oats. They add milk into it to make it more creamy. I really liked the first time and the second time was even better. After breakfast we went back to the market because my house mom said what she had planned for dinner she needed something fresh. This time we went into a part of the market that I hade never been in. We went into the fresh seafood section. I thought that it was really cool because they had these huge fish layed up on big beds of ice. so we got the fish that she wanted and headed back home. Once we got hame she started to prepare one of the fish that we got for cooking .So for lunch we had sopón de pescado. I dont think that we have had this before so I am ready to try something new. This was a fish soup. I thought that it was really good and you could defently tell that the fish that was put in the soup was very fresh. I really do think that I would order this in a restaurant if a saw it on the menu. After lunch we just stayed at the house and layed some famous Puerto Rican board games. After we played for a while my house dad went out in back yard and cleaned the fish that we where going to have for dinner. For dinner we had mojo isleño which is a fried fish dish with a special dipping sauce. I asked my house mom what was in the homemade sauce and she said that she could not tell me because it was one of the secret family recipies that she could not tell anyone. I thought that it was really good though. For dessert we had nisperos de batata which are sweet potato balls which where rolled in powdered sugar and cinnimon. We have had this before and I really liked them so I know that they will be good this time too. Well I am now counting down my days left here in Puerto Rico before I leave and I only have two more days until my plane leaves Tuesday morning.

May 9, 2010
I am coming very close to the end of my visit here in Puerto Rico. I have experienced alot of amazing things while I have been here one of them being the food. This morning for breakfast we are having a traditional American breakfast. We had eggs, bacon and hashbrowns. I really did like this but I can have this at home and I wanted somthing that I had not ate before but it really reminded me of home and made me want to go back. After breakfast we went to the beach and swam and surfed in the ocean. We stayed there a really long time, we almost missed lunch but we made it back in time. For lunch today we had tortilla española which was the spanish omelet that we had last week. I was really good I thought that it might have even been better the second time but I also might have just been really hungery too from the beach. After lunch I went down to the market by my self. Today is Mothers Day in the US and I wanted to get my real mom something to take home with me and my house mom in Puerto Rico something too. I found some really cool things for both of them. After I was done I went back home and told my house mother about Mothers Day and gave her the gift she really liked it. After that she went into the kichen and started to make dinner. For dinner we had tostones which is fried pork with some fried breadfruit slices served with it. I thought that it was very good I had never had it or herd of it. It is a very famous fruit on some of the tropical islands including Puerto Rico. For dessert we had something that was very good made with one of my favorite fruits from the US. We had banana cupcakes. They where so good so I asked my house mom for the recipe and she gave it to me. It will be posted under the recipe tab from the home page. Well tomarrow is the last day and I hope that it is a good one.

May 10, 2010
Well it is my last day here in Puerto Rico and I have enjoyed every moment of it. All the food that I have ate has been great there has only bbem a handful of things that I have not liked. So for my last breakfast here we had the islands main crop plantains. I love them all ways but today we had them grilled which is the most popular way to prepare them in America. They where so sweet and good I really hope that in America I can find some as fresh as these. After we got done eating breakfast we went down to the beach for the last time before I left. We stayed there the longest that we had ever stayed there over my visit. We almost missed lunch but as we where walking in the door she was sitting the lunch on the table. So for lunch we had sesos empanados which where breaded and fried calf brains. They where pretting good it was good to have something so exodic on my last day visiting. I really thought that they had a very interesting flavor that I had never tasted before. After lunch we had to go back to my favorite place in Puerto Rico the market. I really love that place there are so many people there just walking around and being very social with everyone else. Everyone in Puerto Rico is nice to everyone else. Well we made our way back home and my house mom started to make dinner. For dinner we had jueyes hervidos which was boiled crabs. They where so good because there seafood is so fresh here nothing comes from the frozen section of the grocery store.  The crabs where covered in some special kind of blend of seasoning that she would not tell me what was in it beacouse she said that it was a secret in her family. Well for dessert  we had piña coladas. We went out on the back deck and we sat around and talked about how much I enjoyed there countrie and how they should come and stay in America for a while. The piña coladas where so cool and refreshing out in the warm summers night and I would say that was the best nisht that I had in Puerto Rico.

May 11, 2010
